Siwa, Siwa Oasis

here is no electricity. It is the first thing anyone tells you about Adrère Amellal, and the last thing you think about once you are there. The lodge stands beneath the White Mountain on the shore of Siwa's salt lake, far west of the Nile, close enough to the Libyan sand to feel it. It was raised the way Siwa has always raised buildings — kershef, the local mixture of sun-dried rock salt, clay and straw, with sandstone for the bathrooms, palm trunk and frond for the chairs, olivewood doors, hand-woven cloth. Forty rooms, no two the same. The pool flows out of one of the oasis's natural springs, shaded by palm. Dinner is laid in a different courtyard, grotto or terrace each evening, and at dusk the whole labyrinth is lit by beeswax candle and the desert sky — a place Condé Nast Traveler once described as monastery, seraglio and sandcastle at once.

Adrère Amellal withholds almost everything a hotel is supposed to provide. Knowing that in advance is the difference between the trip of a lifetime and a long week.

Off-grid means off-grid. No electricity, no air conditioning, no Wi-Fi, no room service. Light after dark is candle and lamp. There is nowhere to charge a phone or a camera, so bring power banks charged before you leave, and expect them to be the only battery you have for the duration. Tell anyone who might need to reach you that they will not be able to.

The route matters more than the distance. Siwa is roughly eight hours by road from Cairo. Approach is via Alexandria and Marsa Matruh: the FCDO excepts the oasis town of Siwa and the Marsa Matruh–Siwa road from its Western Desert advice, but advises against all but essential travel on the Al Bawiti–Siwa road, which is closed and checkpointed. Siwa also sits in the western reaches of the country, and all travel within 20km of the Egypt–Libya border is advised against. We route accordingly and we do not improvise.
